Why You Should Join Our Free Divestment, Reinvestment and Ethical Finance Training This Summer

Are you a student leader passionate about climate justice, social justice, and challenging the status quo of university finance? Whether you’re campaigning for divestment, sitting on finance committees, or simply eager to learn how your university’s money could better serve people and the planet. Join our free Divestment, Reinvestment and Ethical Finance Training.
This unique, in-person training opportunity is brought to you by Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS-UK), as part of our Invest for Change programme. It's designed to empower students to take bold, informed action on university investment policies.
Who Is It For?
This training is open to:
- Sabbatical officers and student representatives on finance, investment, or university governance committees
- Student campaigners pushing for ethical and sustainable university investments
- Student society members or groups interested in ethical finance and climate justice
No previous financial knowledge is needed. Just curiosity, commitment, and the drive to make change.
What Will You Gain?
This confidence-building one-day training will help you:
- Understand the systems of oppression upheld by the finance system
- Build foundational financial literacy, from jargon-busting to real-world application
- Learn how universities invest and how you can influence it
- Develop the tools to advocate for divestment, reinvestment, and ethical finance
- Gain confidence to engage with university governance structures
- Discover how to push for transparency and accountability in university finance
- Connect with a UK-wide network of like-minded student leaders
Last year, over 60 students from more than 35 institutions joined us, representing over 20 percent of UK university students. Find our how it went here.
“This training is not only interesting and empowering but it's also relevant to student officers. I now feel like I can make a change and have a big impact.” - Student Attendee, 2024.
When and Where?
We’re running three sessions this year from 10am to 4pm:
- Glasgow - Glasgow Caledonian Students’ Association - Wednesday 20th August
- London - Location TBC - Wednesday 27th August
- Birmingham - Aston Students’ Union - Friday 12th September
A free vegetarian or vegan lunch will be provided.
Travel costs are expected to be covered by your Students’ Union or Association, or your university. We encourage you to request support, as this training will directly benefit your role in university governance. Multiple attendees from the same SU/SA are welcome to apply.
Why This Training Matters
Universities hold billions of pounds in investments. Often in sectors that contribute to the climate crisis and social injustice. But students have the power to challenge this. With growing calls for transparency, divestment, and responsible reinvestment, student voices are more important than ever.
Don’t Miss Out - Places Fill Fast
We expect places to go quickly again this year. You can apply on behalf of your successor if your term ends before the training takes place. If they are unable to attend, they can get in touch with us directly.
